This a photo that continues to be shared widely—I’m often surprised to see it pop up as a screensaver or a snapshot on someone’s phone, whether in an airport line or just passing by on the street. I captured this image in Siglufjörður, Northern Iceland, in December 2022. After a long drive through near-zero visibility in a fierce snowstorm, I reached an open fjord, where everything suddenly stilled, as if someone had hit the pause button. Out of the quiet appeared this red horse, standing alone. It was as if we both stumbled upon each other unexpectedly, equally captivated.

He stood there, radiant and almost mystical, calmly letting me take photo after photo. I sensed that he, too, was enjoying the moment. The instant felt surreal and unforgettable, one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve had as a photographer. As I finished, the snowstorm returned, and I navigated back through the icy unknown, holding on to that incredible moment. This photo remains a profound memory—one I can’t fully explain but will always cherish.
